Things I wouldn’t have realized if I hadn’t toured the country: Ohio borders Kentucky. I think of Ohio as the Midwest and Kentucky as the South. So if you’d told me they were the same distance apart as Minnesota and South Carolina I would have believed you. Instead, check it out, they’re adjacent. In fact we stayed at a hotel in Kentucky for the show in Cincinnati.

And then, thank the lord, we had a day off. That had been a three-fer and now we got a day off, two shows in the same venue, and then another day off (though it was a travel day).

Martin missed the bus to Detroit. This surprised no one, really, since he’d informed the crew he’d get himself there. It was only like a two or three hour drive and I think he convinced either Mary or Sue to just drive him.

Once he did get to Detroit, he thanked me before soundcheck because he’d had such a good time with them. I told him I thought even if I hadn’t been there he would have been perfectly equipped to make that pickup without me, but he seemed convinced it was my presence that had drawn them over like a magnet.

I made my way to the gate, my left thumb aching a little from carrying the guitar in that hand all the time since the splinted hand really couldn’t take any weight.

There was Mel. Ford was crashed out on her shoulder. I sat down next to her, quietly, waving hello. She smiled a little wryly as she waved back.

“Let me guess. You have to pee,” I said.

I met the Nomad entourage at their lobby call the next day. The bus ride to the venue wasn’t far in distance but, you know, it’s the New York metro area so getting from Manhattan to anywhere was going to be at least 45 minutes to an hour, and that’s if there wasn’t any special traffic problem like an accident or something.

Long Island is a lot like New Jersey, by the way, except I didn’t have the same negative associations with it.

There were a lot of extra people around. Typical for a New York metro area show. The only thing that kept it down the day before was the stomach flu warnings, I guess.

That meant a lot of extra people distracting me before soundcheck, so that when soundcheck time came I was surprised by it. And a lot of extra people watching and listening to the soundcheck.

And the lounge act. “Who’s got our lounge act today?” I asked.
